A few chapters back we learned that “wickedness never was
happiness” (Alma 41:10). In this
chapter, Captain Moroni defines for us what happiness is, using the fascinating
phrase, “the maintenance of the sacred word of God.” Or in other words, keeping God’s
commandments.
When we purchase an automobile, it usually comes with an
owner’s manual. Inside the owner’s
manual we can find a maintenance schedule that tells when we should have
certain components of vehicle checked, serviced or replaced to keep it running
at its best. Sacred writings are the
owner’s manual for life. They tell us
how to work on ourselves to keep our spiritual engines running smoothly. If we perform for ourselves “the maintenance
of the sacred word of God” it will bring us the happiness that the gospel
promises us. Let us refer regularly to
our “owner’s manual” so we can perform the necessary scheduled maintenance for
ourselves.
